I’ve been an ecommerce specialist for over 10 years now. In this time ecommerce has changed significantly and what was cutting edge back then is just old now. Back then I built some of the first mobile ecommerce websites. Those were the days before responsive designs existed. Now everything (including Google Search) is mobile first.
I moved from the UK, where I worked on BIG ecommerce websites such as Waitrose, Argos and Figleaves. These were multi-million revenue generators, but what’s interesting is that the principles of ecommerce are the same from the biggest platform to the smallest. This includes Shopify and WordPress stores. What I do now is help store owners to understand how ecommerce works and how they can take advantage of the latest technology and trends.

Between then and now I still see some of the same issues for new entrants and small stores. The ‘build it and they will come’ mentality is still there. I can pretty much guarantee that no one will come to your shiny new online store without a significant marketing campaign. If a search engine can’t place you on the first page, no customer will find you either.

Whilst Social Media is essential to interact with a potential audience, there are still barriers to getting visitors from Social platforms to your website.
